In the photograph by Eddie Adams, which shows a Vietnam soldier executing a male, he made certain choices when taking the photo so it would have impact on the audience. For example, if this photo were taken from behind, the whole effect of the photo would change. The man that we see would become faceless, changing the whole photo. If he were faceless, it would make the photo less personal, and we wouldn’t be able to place a face with the person. If the photo were taken a few minutes earlier, it wouldn’t be as impactful. When the soldier’s arm is up and ready to fire, viewers know what is about to follow making it tough to look at and more impactful. If his arm was down, and the man was standing there, the viewers would feel like there is still a chance to save the man. If this photo was taken a few minutes later, we would see the man on the ground after being killed. This would be just as impactful as the original photo, however the original photo is more impactful because it is like the viewer is about to witness a murder happen when we see the soldier ready to fire. I think the photographer included all of the elements in this photo so we can judge the situation. If the photo was just the man about to be executed, we wouldn’t be able to tell that he is about to be killed.
What is the difference between a good photo and a bad photo? A snapshot or fine art? Well there are many things, for example snapshots usually couldn’t be seen in a gallery, or they are usually not good quality and just for the memories. Whereas a good photo or fine art, is thoughtful, more formal, and has a more dramatic element to it. The one thing these two do have in common however, is that they both have subject matter. It is the way a photographer shows the subject matter that differentiates a good photo from a bad photo. A good photo will make you take in everything about the picture, not just the subject matter. Snapshots are more informal and the subject matter tends to be the only thing you focus on, not the lighting, contrast, or exposure, like in a good photo. For example, a snapshot or bad photo is when you are at a family gathering and your mom forces you to pose for the camera. Then when you look at the photo later in twenty years, you think about that moment in time. A piece of fine art photography might make you think about a specific moment also, however it will also produce an emotion and make you feel something. This photo should also bring you to that moment and make you feel like you were apart of what is going on. In my opinion, if someone’s photography has the ability to make someone feel something, and bring him or her to a certain place emotionally, that is a good photo.
